Project Overview

The High Desert House is a contemporary residential landscape located in Yakima, Washington, shaped by the region’s arid climate and expansive valley views. The project responds to the site’s southern exposure and open setting through a restrained design approach that emphasizes material clarity, durability, and a strong connection between architecture and landscape.

Bryan supported the design team through key phases of site development, including driveway layout, hardscape material selection, grading coordination, and the integration of planting and lighting strategies that reinforce the overall design intent.

Design Intent

The landscape was conceived as a quiet counterpart to the architecture — minimal, intentional, and grounded in place. The design prioritizes simplicity and legibility, allowing form, material, and light to define the experience.

A contemporary aesthetic guided all design decisions, with an emphasis on clean lines, subtle transitions, and a limited material palette. Outdoor spaces were shaped to feel composed yet natural, reinforcing the relationship between built form and the surrounding high desert landscape.

Landscape Strategy

The planting design draws from high desert ecologies, utilizing drought-tolerant species well suited to Yakima’s climate. Grasses, shrubs, and perennials were selected for their resilience, low water demand, and seasonal variation, providing year-round interest through shifts in color, texture, and form.

Hardscape and grading were carefully coordinated to support both function and visual clarity, creating outdoor spaces that feel purposeful. Integrated lighting enhances circulation and highlights key landscape elements while maintaining a subdued, atmospheric quality consistent with the project’s minimalist character.
