Project Overview
The Hachidori Residence is a modern private home located in McMinnville, designed and constructed to Passive House standards. At 1,458 square feet, the project demonstrates how high-performance building strategies can be paired with thoughtful landscape design to create a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor living.
The landscape plays a central role in shaping arrival, movement, and everyday use—reinforcing the home’s architectural clarity while supporting accessibility and environmental performance.
Design Intent
The design intent was to strengthen the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding garden while maintaining a calm, cohesive aesthetic. Particular attention was given to how residents move through and experience the site—from arrival at the front entry to daily use of the rear outdoor living spaces.
The landscape is designed to complement the home’s modern architecture and Passive House principles, emphasizing simplicity, efficiency, and a strong sense of spatial continuity.
Landscape Strategy
An ADA-accessible wooden bridge leads to the front entry, spanning a stormwater collection area and transforming a functional site requirement into a meaningful arrival experience. This element establishes a clear threshold while reinforcing the project’s integration of sustainability and design.
At the rear of the home, operable glass walls open directly to a deck that functions as an extension of the interior living space. The deck incorporates a concrete Argentine wood-fire grill and dining area, supporting year-round outdoor use and gathering.
Surrounding the building, a Japanese-inspired planting palette was selected to complement the architectural language and create a composed garden setting. Custom concrete pavers flow through the landscape, visually tying together entry, circulation, and outdoor living areas while reinforcing material consistency across the site.
