Cowiche Canyon Residence

Project Overview

Situated on a prominent hillside overlooking Cowiche Canyon, this project enhances the grounds of a historically inspired 1770s replica residence set within a dramatic shrub-steppe landscape. In collaboration with the architect, contractor and property owner, Method provided landscape architectural services from schematic design through construction documentation for the phased redevelopment of the site.

The landscape design responds to both the scale of the canyon and the architectural character of the home, creating an outdoor environment that feels grounded in history while supporting contemporary use.

Design Intent

The landscape design seeks to balance the historic character of the residence with the realities of a steep, highly visible hillside site and the requirements of contemporary living. The approach prioritizes sensitivity to landform and scale, using the natural slope of the site to organize circulation, planting, and outdoor spaces in a way that feels deliberate rather than imposed.

Landscape Strategy

Phase One focused on transforming a two-acre lower pasture into an arboretum and trail network. This phase established an immersive landscape experience that reflects the native ecology of the Cowiche Canyon region, while providing opportunities for walking, exploration, and long-term canopy growth. The arboretum reinforces a sense of permanence and stewardship, allowing the landscape to mature naturally over time.

Phase Two introduced a new pool deck and outdoor living space aligned with existing site circulation and architectural geometry. These spaces were designed to integrate seamlessly with the residence, providing functional gathering areas while maintaining visual continuity with the broader landscape.
