Project Overview
CCC Randall Hall is a two story, 68,000 square foot academic and athletic building housing a gymnasium and classrooms, with a daylight basement below, located on the campus of Clackamas Community College. As part of a broader building renovation completed in 2020, the design team explored improvements to the main entry courtyard, which sits over occupied space and presented ongoing stormwater performance challenges.
The courtyard redesign was developed to address functional and environmental issues while reimagining the space as a more welcoming and usable gathering area for students.
Design Intent
The design intent for the courtyard was to improve stormwater performance and enhance the quality of the building’s primary outdoor entry space. The existing courtyard lacked clear drainage organization and did not provide a comfortable or functional place for students to gather.
Working collaboratively with the architect and civil engineer, the landscape design focused on improving site performance, circulation, and usability while aligning with the larger renovation of Randall Hall.
Landscape Strategy
As landscape architect, Bryan worked closely with the design team to develop multiple design options that addressed stormwater issues associated with the over structure courtyard condition. The proposed designs reconfigured paving surfaces and slopes to direct water away from the building and into a centralized landscape infiltration area, improving overall site performance.
In addition to resolving technical challenges, the design introduced enhanced paving patterns and site furnishings to create a more inviting and flexible outdoor space. These elements were intended to transform the courtyard into a functional entry plaza that could support informal student gathering and daily use.
